BEHIND THE SCENES: THE MARENGO GROUP NAME AND LOGO:
Jerry shares the story behind The Marengo Group name,
organization, and logo…
"When I formed my company, I thought long and hard about the name. I settled on The Marengo Group for various reasons. First, it was the name of Napoleon’s most famous horse (and since my first book was on Napoleon, I figure I’d pay homage to “the horse that brung me,” literally and figuratively).
Second, the Battle of Marengo, which Napoleon’s horse was named after, had special meaning as well. It was a pivotal victory for Napoleon, but it was almost a defeat. When a surprise attack by the Austrians caught his troops off guard, Napoleon needed a miracle. He received it when a division he had already sent away turned around, because their leader, General Louis Desaix, heard the cannon fire at Marengo.
Although Desaix was killed in that battle, it was his intuition and brave decision that saved the day. It should serve as a reminder that things do not always go as planned, and that many victories are due to flexible thinking, quick decisions, and heroic efforts. In other words, people who didn’t just blindly “follow the rules.” Good principles and judgment must prevail.
Of course, the final element to the company’s name is the word “Group.” I strongly believe that the “virtual” organization is the way of the future. With this in mind, I've partnered with a number of like-minded consultants to offer a more holistic set of services to clients.
This approach will help establish an ecosystem with global reach, yet local presence. As the organization evolves, stay tuned for additional service and product offerings. One thing will be certain: all of these offerings will be grounded in good principles with a relentless focus on the customer experience.
And so we have The Marengo Group.
Just as it was important to have a meaningful name, I also wanted a meaningful logo---something iconic that had some significance behind it. The concept I settled on had three elements. First, the horse represents Napoleon’s horse, Marengo. Second, I wanted it to appear as a chess piece to symbolize the need to meditate and strategize before undertaking an endeavor. And finally, I wanted an hourglass in the design as a reminder that one must never forget the delicate balance between analysis (or exactitude) and speed. Fortunately, my talented graphic artist, Brian DiMeo of DiMeo Designs, was able to turn this high level concept into reality.
And so, with the name and logo, I have a constant reminder of the need for principles and good judgment, the need to meditate and plan, and the need to achieve rapid results. I hope that when you see the logo, you will perhaps be inspired likewise."
